제목 Metal-organic frameworks as catalysts for the Diels-Alder conversion of biomass-derived furans to renewable p-xylene
초록 p-Xylene (PX) is a crucial chemical feedstock and an essential starting material of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is one of the most industrially important polymers with the production of more than 34 million tons in 2018. In this work, the catalytic production of renewable PX from biomass-derived 2,5-dimethlyfuran was studied using Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) as a catalyst. MOFs have many advantages such as their excellent porosity and tunable acidity. The MOF catalysts comprise of metal-containing secondary building units (SBUs) and organic ligands, and the acid site can be adjusted by their linking molecular networks. According to the prior reports (e.g., HY and BEA zeolites), the type of acid sites is a prime determinant of the conversion rate and the PX selectivity. In the MOFs, the metal center can serve as a Lewis acid site, while the additional BrØndsted acidity can be provided by the sulfonation of organic linkers. Therefore, this study compared the conversion and selectivity of various MOF catalysts having only Lewis acid sites and both Lewis acid sites and BrØnsted acid sites for the Diels-Alder cycloaddition of DMF to PX.
