제목 Development of highly selective catalyst for the chlorination of methane to methyl chloride
초록 Methane (CH4) is an important feedstock for the synthesis of fuels and value-added chemicals. At present, CH4 is converted into bulk chemicals by an indirect route via syngas. However, this route is complex, energy intensive, and the capital cost is high. Therefore, the direct conversion of CH4 to value-added products under mild conditions with much less energy has been a subject of great importance in economical CH4 utilization. Chlorination of CH4 is an attractive route to convert CH4 into more valuable chemicals. The selective formation of methyl chloride (CH3Cl) intermediate is a key process, but it is rather difficult to achieve a high selectivity due to a radical reaction. Catalytic ionic process can be a solution. In this work, sulfated tin oxide (STO) has been synthesized and employed in the gas-phase catalytic chlorination of CH4 for the first time. The STO catalyst exhibited exceptionally high selectivity to CH3Cl even at high CH4 conversion.
