제목 | A study on the low-pressure gas nitriding of Austenitic stainless steel |
초록 | Stainless steels exhibit generally poor tribological properties which limit their application conditions including tribocorrosive environments. Surface treatments such as nitriding can enhance the surface hardness of these steels, which improves wear resistance. But the nitriding of stainless steels is very difficult because of a dense oxide film existing on the surface of the specimen and preventing the formation of the nitride. So, it is considered that the plasma nitriding process is the best option for nitriding of stainless steel. In this study, a low-pressure gas nitriding (around 200 torr) has been tried to form a nitride layer on the surface of austenitic stainless steel. the surface was activated by oxidation-reduction process using N2O and NH3 gases. Various techniques were used to characterize the structures and properties of the nitrided stainless steels. These include metallographic analysis for morphology and microstructure examination, glow discharge spectrometry (GDS) analysis for chemical composition determination, X-ray diffraction analysis for phase identification, and indentation tests for micro hardness and load bearing capacity measurement. |
