In an autotrophic microalgae culture system using industrial flue gas, a decrease in the pH drop of the media due to the continuous supply of CO2 inhibits cell growth. Expensive buffering agents result in increases the overall cost of the culture process. Herein, we used bicarbonate and phosphate develops an economic buffering agent for large-scale use. The bicarbonate buffer system relies on CO2 dissolution in an alkaline solution, and the in sequence bicarbonate/phosphate buffer system improves the buffer performance for a condition with increased CO2 (~10%). Finally, the buffer system was observed to increase the biomass and astaxanthin productivity to 105% and 103%, respectively. These results show that the proposed buffer system is applicable in mass outdoor microalgae cultivation using industrial flue gas and that it is also economical. |
