Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have taken attention due to their capability of electricity generation and wastewater treatment simultaneously. However, their performance is primarily limited by the slow oxygen reduction reaction caused by electron depletion on bioanode. To overcome this limitation, we suggest the hybrid MFCs in which a conventional bioanode is coupled with photoanode. The photoanode utilizes light to supply additional photogenerated electrons to the MFCs, which promotes the ORR, as confirmed by power density measurement and EIS analysis, resulting in improved power generation (1,284±20 mW m−2) compared to that of a conventional MFCs (850±12 mW m−2). Additionally, TiO2 photoanode reduce CO2 to methane. |
