Fabrication of One-Dimensional Colloidal Assemblies from Electrospun Nanofibers |

The one-dimensional (1D) colloidal assemblies have been applied in various areas such as photonic molecules, microphotonic devices, and microfluidic control devices. Recently, several methods were suggested to fabricate the 1D colloidal assemblies including colloidal crystallization using various confined geometries. However, these methods are not suitable for mass-production because the preparation and subsequent removal of the sacrificial templates involve time consuming processes. In this work, we employed electrospinning to produce a 1D colloidal assembly. We first prepared a mixed solution of colloidal particle and polymeric liquid, and then, the mixture solution was cast into nanofibers by electrospinning. As the electrospun fiber was extended, the colloidal particles dispersed in the polymer solution began to assemble spontaneously into a pearl-necklace structure. We also demonstrated the alignment of 1D colloidal assembly using a designed configuration of collector electrodes. |
