Interfacial and Mechanical Evaluation of Carbon Fiber Reinforced CNT-epoxy Nanocomposites for High temperature Applications |

Interfacial properties of carbon fiber reinforced CNT-epoxy nanocomposites was investigated by electro-micromechanical technique combined with wettability test. Dispersion of CNT nanofillers was improved by surface modification to obtain uniformly dispersed nanocomposites. The dispersion state was observed by electrical resistance measurement. There were consistent results between static and dynamic contact angles on CNT-epoxy nanocomposites measured by optical and Wilhelmy plate methods. Since the hydrophobic domains of CNT are formed in heterogeneous style on the outermost surface, CNT-epoxy nanocomposites exhibited hydrophobicity. CNT-epoxy nanocomposites exhibited a better mechanical property due to better stress transfer. Interfacial shear strength between single carbon fiber and CNT-epoxy nanocomposites increased due to the microstructures of carbon nanotube at interface.
