The preparation of colored polymer particles has attracted great interest in research and industrial fields due to their wide variety of applications such as paints and coatings, photonic crystals, chemical and biological sensors, drug delivery, electrophoretic display, and microelectronics, and so on. Suspension polymerization is known to be a good and easy way to produce the colored polymeric particles by one step, but have a problem in broad particle size distribution. Miniemulsions are dispersions of relatively stable monomer droplets, with 50~500 nm, in water dispersions by making up with mixture containing monomer, water, surfactant, and cosurfactant. After all, polymer particles are formed from the stable monomer droplets after polymeriztion in them. To get uniform polymer particles, it is important to create a stable starting condition, characterized by small primary droplets with a narrow size distribution. In this report, the preparation of colored polystyrene particles is carried out by using various reaction conditions in miniemulsion polymerization to get uniform size distribution(less than 1.1 in PSD). |
