제목 Defect engineering in metal-organic frameworks: a novel approach to design advanced mixed matrix membranes for C3H6/C3H8 separation
초록 Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been extensively investigated as a promising nanofiller to develop high-performance mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). Herein, we first demonstrate “defect engineering” concept as an additional degree of freedom to design advanced MMMs for C3H6/C3H8 separation. MMMs exhibited significantly improved separation performances - exceptionally high C3H6 permeability (more than 10 times higher than pure polymer) with maintaining C3H6/C3H8 selectivity - as increasing defect concentration in embedded MOFs, far surpassing the upper bound of pure polymer membranes. Their separation mechanism was elucidated within the framework of solution-diffusion model coupled with the systematical characterizations on filler-matrix interfaces, disclosing the role of defect sites in MOFs for providing ultrafast diffusion pathway with preferred C3H6 sorption.
