The objectives of the present study are to experimentally evaluate the performance of mixed-bed ion exchange column for the silica removal at ultralow concentrations of ppb level under the various conditions. Using a fixed exchange column, the effects of the major column parameters such as temperature, cation resin ratio, concentration of feed solution, and flow rate on the performance of the unit for the silica removal were analyzed. The results of the experiments were plotted as effluent concentration vs. reaction time. Also, the effect of chloride ion in solution, which can be seen easily in normal solution, on the fate of silica in solution was evaluated. The results of this study will support various information to evaluate the effects of the system parameters on the performance of mixed-bed ion exchange. Also, the results will be the bases for the reasonable design and operation of the system by supporting the model that can predict accurately the column performance to remove silica at ultralow concentrations. |
