Polymers are usually not homogeneous and contain various heterogeneities in molecular weight, chain architecture, functionality, and so on. Precise characterization of such polymers with multivariate distributions is nontrivial, but it is the obstacle that should be overcome unless precise molecular characteristics are not important for the physicochemical properties of the polymers. Unfortunately, size exclusion chromatography (SEC) based characterization of polymers often cannot do a good enough job. Other HPLC separation and mass spectrometry methods can supplement the limitation of SEC to some extent. In this presentation, some of our recent experiences on precise molecular characterizations of polystyrene-g-polyisoprene graft polymer, cyclic polystyrene, and ATRP grown polystyrene will be discussed. |
