Temperature gradient interaction chromatography (TGIC) is one of the HPLC methods for molecular characterization of polymers. In TGIC, temperature of the separation column is varied in a programmed manner during the elution to control the enthalpic interaction of polymers with stationary phase. TGIC shows far superior resolution to that of size exclusion chromatography due to the lower band-broadening effect. In this study, TGIC resolutions of five C18 bonded silica columns with various pore sizes are compared with the same polystyrene standards set. The results show that the TGIC separation efficiency of polymers is affected by pore size significantly. In general, small pore size columns are more effective seemingly due to their large stationary phase content (surface area). For high molecular weight polymers, however, large pore size column becomes better than small pore size column probably due to the better accessibility of the polymer to the pore. |
