Ethanol is commonly recovered by distillation due to availability of abundant bio-waste as energy source. Though extraction is well-known energy-efficient process replacing distillation, proper solvent has not been developed for ethanol recovery. A branched long-change alcohol, 2-methyl pentanol, is proposed for the extraction solvent. For the process development of the extraction and ethanol concentration with ethylene-glycol extractive distillation, thermodynamic models of VLE and LLE systems were composed using molecular simulation and experimental results. The optimized process design demonstrates reducing more than a quarter of heat duty used in the previous recovery processes. |
