Aromatic polyamides represent an important class of polymeric materials from both the academic and the industrial points of view. Unfortunately, because of strong intermolecular interactions due to hydrogen bonding, their solubility in common organic solvents is often extremely poor. In this study, N-substitution of amide group of PPTA with 1,3-propanesultone and p-methoxybenzyl chloride was performed in order to increase solubility of PPTA in. N-substituted PPTA were characterized by NMR, titration, and FT-IR. Resulting polymers were transformed into proton exchange membrane for fuel cell application. Then, N-deprotection of p-methoxybenzyl group was carried out in order to increase thermal acd mechanical properties. Finally, the possibilities of applying these membranes to fuel cell application were examined. |
