Fabrication of the Nano sized Dense Structured Catalyst layer prepared by electrostatic spray deposition |

Electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) is a process that an aerosol of a solution is ejected from metal syringe nozzle with a high applied voltage to a thin film on the counter electrode. A dispersive solution containing Pt/C (Platinum on carbon black) particles and Nafion solution was sprayed by using the ESD method. The catalyst ink containing Pt/C particles was successfully atomized and deposited under the applied electric field. In this paper, Nano sized Dense Structure (NSDS) catalyst layer was prepared by ESD method. A NSDS is fabricated by a phase-separated morphology in an agglomerated catalyst layer of Pt/C and Nafion. Both the anode and cathode of membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for proton exchange membrane fuel cells were covered by NSDS catalyst layer and the NSDS catalyst layer improved the water-capping effect. As a result, a good performance of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) of PEMFC at zero relative humidity (RH) is obtained because the NSDS catalyst layer enables the self-humidification. |
