This study introduces a facile yet practically useful approach to synthesize associative cellulose nanofluid with stress-responsive rheological behaviors in an aqueous solution. For this, we first synthesized associative cellulose nanocrystals (ACNCs) by functionalizing CNCs with tirmethoxyoctadecyl silane. Then, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical mediated oxidation was carried out to produce fine ACNC dispersions in aqueous media. ACNCs display the inter-fibril association driven by the hydrophobic interaction, thus forming a nanofibrillar crystalline gel phase. We observe that the viscosity of the ACNC nanofluid shows reversible shear thinning in response to the applied shear stress. From suspension rheological studies, we have demonstrated that the ACNC nanofluid show not only extraordinary viscosity enhancement, but also excellent tolerance to pH changes and salinity. |
