Because of its small size, nano and microplastics have large surface-to-volume ratios, which act as good adsorbents for loading toxic chemicals such as heavy metals and organic chemicals. These adsorbed toxic chemicals are ingested through inhalation or contact by biological species in the aquatic ecosystem, and are subsequently released by the desorption process, possibly causing toxicity or accumulating along the food chain. This study examined the toxicity of phenanthrene, one of the nanoplastics and hydrophobic organic pollutants. The physicochemical properties of nanoplastic and phenanthrene were identified, and each toxic substance was exposed to zebrafish embryos alone and simultaneously to confirm toxicity. |
