Membrane process has been used in wide applications such as water treatment, batteries, fuel cells, and industrial gas separations. However its operation is typically suffer from surface fouling with colloidal particulates and bacteria infestations. We previously developed a nanoporous material based on polymer blends. Due to the advantage of high degree of control over thickness, Layer-by-Layer (LbL) technique may provide the opportunity of making thin film composite membrane. Therefore, we studied nanostructured multilayer films of different kind of polymers such as block copolymer and homopolymer those could form thin films by LbL process. We used a selective removal of one polymer from the blend and it created a nanoporous structure. This nanoporous film shows a beneficial property as a membrane material such as anti-fouling and high rejection ratio. We studied the morphology of the blends using AFM and SEM analysis. Filtration study of the nanoporous blends was also conducted. |
