Synthesis, characterization and ethylene oligomerization studies of Ni(II) complexes ligated by [1-(1-alkyl-1H-benzoimidazol-2-yl)-alkyl-methylidene]-aryl amines |

The design and synthesis of efficient transition metal complex catalysts that precisely control olefin coordination polymerization and oligomerization attracted considerable interest recently. In that aspect, we have designed and synthesized a new series of Ni(II) complexes based on (benzimidazolyl-alkyl-methylidene)-aryl amines ligands. The ligands were synthesized by condensation between benzoimidazolyl-alkyl-methanones and corresponding 2, 6-dialkyl substituted anilines. Variations in the electronic nature of ligands were achieved by N-alkylation of the benzimidazol ring. The complexes showed productivity in excess of 1.6 x 106 g oligomer per mol Ni-1 h-1 towards ethylene oligomerization on activation with ethylaluminum sesquichloride producing butenes as the major product (~ 90%) along with the formation of hexenes(~10%) |
