Aromatic azo compounds are one of the valuable chemicals widely utilized in industry as dyes, food additive and drugs. The selective formation of aromatic azo compounds in economic and environmentally friendly method is needed in industrial level. In this research, hollow cerium oxide sphere was utilized to selective synthesis of 2,2'-azodianiline by selective aerobic oxidation of o-phenylenediamine. As O2 was utilized for oxidizing agent and reaction was catalysed by hollow cerium oxide sphere, this method is much beneficial in economic and environmental aspects compared to conventional way of synthesis using stoichiometric amount of transition metal catalyst or nitrates. This result is due to prominent redox property of cerium oxide with high number of mobile oxygen vacancy. Moreover, its hollow sphere structure has advantages in high-surface area and uniformity of particle size and there has been limited examples using this cerium oxide to produce meaningful organic compounds. |
