We will discuss the self-assembly behavior of nitrilotiracetic acid (NTA)-end-functionalized amphiphilic block copolymer, NTA-poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate)-block-polystyrene (NTA-p(PEGMA-b-St)) in tetrahydrofuran (THF)/water. After evaporation of THF, nanostructures generated from NTA-p(PEGMA-b-St) have NTA moieties on the surface. As NTA has high affinity to His-tagged proteins, those nanostructures can be platform for protein-based bio-applications. We synthesized NTA-p(PEGMA-b-St) by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method. To induce self-assembly, the copolymer was first dissolved in THF as common solvent, water was slowly added to the copolymer/THF solution as selective solvent. Varying water content in the solution, various morphologies including spheres, cylinders and vesicles were observed. The structures of the copolymers were analyzed by GPC, GC and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The transition of morphologies was confirmed by TEM. |
