Performance of fluorinated NiMo/Al2O3 in the HDS of DBT and 4,6-DMDBT in the presence of basic and non-basic nitrogen compounds was investigated. Fluorinated catalysts showed activity superior to that of unfluorinated ones in DBT HDS due to enhancement in metal dispersion and hydrogenation activity, and also in 4,6-DMDBT HDS due to increased number of surface acid sites. The HDS of DBT and 4,6-DMDBT was significantly inhibited by the presence of nitrogen impurities in the reaction stream, to a greater extent by basic compounds than by non-basic ones because the former compounds were more effectively adsorbed on catalytic and acidic sites than the latter. Nevertheless, the activity of fluorinated catalysts remained higher than that of non-fluorinated ones. The preservation of relatively large amounts of catalytic and acidic sites on fluorinated catalysts even after poisoning by nitrogen impurities was confirmed by NO chemisorption and FTIR observations. |
