It is important to tailor surface chemical composition and topography for controlling interfacial properties including wettability, protein adsorption, and cell/tissue adhesion. Self-assembled monolayers and surface-initiated polymerization have been widely used to modify chemical composition and to control interfacial properties such as wettability and cell adhesion. Micro/nanostructured surface topography can also affect the interfacial properties. By using chemical, topographical, and the combined approaches, we have designed various functional surfaces including superhydrophobic surfaces, non-biofouling surfaces, and the surface to accelerate neurite outgrowth. The biomedical adhesives to achieve high tissue adhesion have also been developed. Herein, I will talk about how we have designed the functional surfaces and interfaces inspired by nature and how important to tailor chemical composition and topography to accomplish the surface functionalities. |
