Polymers with nonlinear optical (NLO) activities have been extensively studied over the past decade because of their potential applications in the field of electro-optic devices. In the developments of NLO polymers, stabilization of electrically-induced dipole alignment is one of important criteria at high temperature. Polyimides for NLO applications have attracted attentions because of their high thermal stability. In this work we prepared new polyimides containing dioxyphenylazonitrothiazolyl group as NLO chromophore. We selected the latter because they have large dipole moment and these groups constitute novel Y-type NLO polyimides, which have not yet been presented in the literature. These Y-type NLO polymers are expected to have both the merits of main-chain and side chain-NLO polymers, namely high thermal stability of dipole alignment and good solubility. After confirming the structure of the resulting polymers, we investigated their properties. |
