Nonlinear optical (NLO) polymers have been extensively studied over the past decade because of their potential applications in electro-optic technology. In the developments of NLO polymers, stabilization of electrically-induced dipole alignment is one of important criteria at high temperature. Polyimides for NLO applications have attracted attentions because of their high thermal stability. In this work we prepared a novel polyimide containing nitrothiazolylazodioxyphenyl group as NLO chromophore. We selected the latter because they have large dipole moment and these groups constitute novel Y-type NLO polyimides, which have not yet been presented in the literature. These Y-type NLO polymers are expected to have both the merits of main-chain and side chain-NLO polymers, namely high thermal stability of dipole alignment and good solubility. After confirming the structure of the resulting polymers, we investigated their properties. |
