Porphyrins play a fundamental role in oxygen transport and charge transfer in catalytic processes in nature. The application of porphyrins in optical sensors is extremely attractive, since their optical properties are easily modulated through conformational design, molecular symmetry, metal complexation, degree of π-conjugation. Here we demonstrate the optical monitoring of various metals with synthesized porphyrin derivatives possessing suitable functional metal ligands, such as Di-(2-picolyl)amine, 2,6-Bis(2-pyridiyl)-4(1H)-pyridone or 1-Aza-18-crown 6-Ether. The metal-ligand attached porphyrins were synthesized by acid-catalyzed condensation of dipyrromethane and formylated metal ligand. All compounds are fully characterized by 1H-NMR, MALDI-TOF-MS, UV-Vis absorption and fluoroscence emission spectroscopies. |
