제목 Pectin hydrogel as an isolated chloroplast niche
초록 Chloroplast is a key organelle of plants that captures atmospheric CO2 and converts it to chemical compounds by harnessing sunlight energy. Therefore, researchers have sought to construct light-powered carbon fixing systems by harnessing chloroplasts. However, one critical limitation of using plant chloroplasts for carbon sequestration is that they lose viability immediately after isolation. Here, we highlight our efforts to extend the photosynthetic activity of isolated chloroplasts through antioxidant treatment and encapsulation in a hydrogel. First, we verify that photopolymerized pectin hydrogel provides comparable physicochemical properties similar to plant cytoplasm and acts as an isolated chloroplast niche. In addition, a particular type of chemical antioxidant effectively scavenges ROS generated during photosynthesis and subsequently extends chloroplasts' lifespan. *This work was supported by NRF (NRF-2020R1A4A1018017) and Creative-Pioneering Researchers Program through SNU.
