Ionic liquids (ILs) are the most preferable alternatives for the existing organic solvents and here we see their successful application in an important organic reaction. In this study, we synthesized imidazolium based dicationic liquids containing dialkylated hydroquinone moiety. The synthesis of dihydropyrimidinones has been achieved by a biginelli reaction of aromatic aldehydes, β-ketoesters and urea/thiourea in the presence of 1,4-bis[6-(3-methylimidazolium)-hexyloxy]benzene dibromide ionic liquid as a catalyst under solvent free conditions. The yields were good and ionic liquid was recycled and reused several times. |
