제목 Effective Treatment of Osteomyelitis using Ion-Complexed Doxycline
초록 Osteomyelitis is a bone infection by bacteria or fungus that causes severe bone damage. In recent years, antibiotic-loaded polymer matrix system has been frequently utilized to treat the osteomyelitis as a local delivery system. However, the insufficient release of antibiotics from the polymer matrix and secondary surgery to remove the polymer matrix still remained as critical limitations in clinical field. In this study, we developed ion-complexed doxycycline which can allow the sustained release of water-soluble antibiotic for sufficient period (~ 6 wks) without any additional polymeric matrix. The drug release behavior, cytotoxicity, and anti-bacterial effect of the ion-complexed doxycycline were investigated. Its remedial effect on the osteomyelitis was also evaluated by animal study using a rat model (femur osteomyelitis).
