Polycaprolactone/Hydroxyapatite Composite Scaffolds for Bone Tissue Engineering |

Autograft and allograft, ceramics, natural and biodegradable synthetic polymers have been used as bone substitutes for bone defect. Hydroxyapatite (HA), which is a typical bone replacement for a long time since the material mimics the natural bone mineral, has good osteoconductive properties and poor fabrication properties. Polycaprolactone (PCL) is well known hydrophobic biodegradable polymers, which is non-toxic aliphatic polyester with biocompatibility. PCL has a potential as promising bone substitutive materials because of its slow degradation properties. However, the mechanical strength of PCL is too weak to use for bone tissue engineering. Therefore, to increase the mechanical and osteoconductive properties of PCL, PCL/HA composite scaffolds were prepared by photopolymerization of the PCL macromer in the presence of HA. The compressive mechanical strength and morphology of PCL/HA composite scaffolds were examined. The cell toxicity and morphology of osteoblast were observed to evaluated the possibility for bone substitutes. |
