Colored polymeric particles with surface charges are important in many technical fields such as biomedicals, information industry, and microelectronics, especially in electrophoretic displays. Blue dyed Polystyrene(PS) particles copolymerized with Acrylic acid/Methacrylic acid(AA/MAA) or Poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate(PEG-MMA) were prepared by PS-seeded emulsion polymerization in this study. 0~33 wt% AA/MAA and 0~9 wt% PEG-MMA were copolymerized with styrene in the presence of 0.2 μm PS seed by seeded emulsion polymerization. These blue-dyed PS particles were characterized by using SEM, IR, UV, DSC/TGA, and zeta-potential measurements. The poly(S-co-AA/MAA) and poly(S-co-PEG-MMA) latices show size in the range of 0.25 ~ 0.4 μm, Tg in 373 ~ 377oK, zeta-potential value in -90 mV ~ -100 mV and electrophoretic mobility in -6.4 ~ -6.9 x 10 -4cm2/Vs. |
