The properties of silver nanoparticles have been intensively studied for the past few decades due to their exceptional antimicrobial and optical properties. However, the silver nanoparticles are unstable in aqueous solution as they agglomerate rapidly. Recently, many other workers have used natural or man made polymers to stabilize the silver particles. In this study, we synthesized ultra-small and well dispersed silver nanoparticles by mixing AgNO3 in chitosan and PEI(polyethylenimine) solution, respectively. Particle size analysis and scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy confirmed that the average diameters of chitosan/silver and PEI/silver nanoparticles are 40 nm and 57 nm, respectively. The ultra-small silver nanoparticles had an antimicrobial activity in the aqueous solution at the concentration over 0.014% by M.I.C test. Suggestively the chitosan/silver and PEI/silver nanoparticles have potentials for development of wound dressings. |
