Ionomer Interfacial Layer for Efficient Bulk Heterojunction Polymer Solar Cells |

Alcohol-soluble perfluorinated ionomer (PFI) has been investigated as an interfacial layer for poly(3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. The PFI dipole layer which was inserted between ITO/poly-(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) anode and the active layer tuned the work function of the anode from 5.3 to 5.8 eV. We finally achieved 15% enhancement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) of BHJ solar cells with PFI interlayer. We strongly suggest two possible reasons for the enhanced performance; larger internal electric field due to the interfacial dipole and better adhesion between PEDOT:PSS and the active layer due to more hydrophobic property of PFI layer than PEDOT:PSS layer. |
