Poly(HEMA) functionalized polystyrene particles for the colloidal suspension to enhance the shear thickening effect |
초록 |
Shear thickening fluid (STF) is a non-Newtonian fluid in which viscosity increases with the shear rate. Shear thickening (ST) effect can occur in a well-dispersed colloidal suspension which usually contains hard particles. The spherical polystyrene nanoparticles with poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate) shell (PS-PHEMA NPs) were prepared as STF component and the rheological properties of STFs using PS-PHEMA NPs was investigated. PS-PHEMA NPs were synthesized using surfactant-free emulsion polymerization followed by dispersing PS-PHEMA NPs into ethylene glycol, forming STFs. We studied the influence of divinyl benzene (DVB) contents and St/HEMA ratio. It was found that the PS-PHEMA NPs exhibited a strong ST effect indicating the maximum viscosity up to 2800 Pa·s when St/HEMA was 4/1 with 10wt% DVB contents compared to styrene. This consequence implies that the hydroxyl group on the particle surface have a critical influence on the rheological behavior of the colloidal suspensions. |
