Recently development of biomass-based plastics has drawn lots of interest to reduce the greenhouse gas emission and to conserve fossil resources. Poly(lactic acid)(PLA) is one of the materials that can be made from renewable resources. It has become a good alternative to the traditional commodity plastics for everyday applications. However, physical properties of PLA are frequently insufficient to be widely used for real applications such as automobile interior parts. Lots of research is in progress to remedy the weak physical properties of PLA. Melt blending of PLA with commercial thermoplastic polymer is one of the solutions. In this study, ABS was melt-blended with PLA. Styrene/acrylonitrile/glycidyl methacrylate copolymer was used as a reactive compatibilizer for ABS/PLA composites to improve the compatibility between ABS and PLA. Dicumyl peroxide was added to further improve the mechanical properties of the composites. |
