Poly(urethane-methyl methacrylate) hybrid emulsions were synthesized to investigate their thermo-mechanical, solvent-resistance and chemical resistance properties. In the synthesis, dimethylol propionic acid was used to impart hydrophilicity to the hybrid polymers and methyl methacrylate monomer was added to the polyurethane prepolymer after the neutralization with triethylamine. After dispersion of the neutralized prepolymer, chain extension was carried out with ethylene diamine. Consequently, poly(urethane-methyl methacrylate) hybrid emulsions were prepared via soap-free emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate with initiator of potassium peroxydisulfate at 70℃. Solvent-resistance, tensile strength, and 100% modulus properties of hybrid emulsion were measured and compared with polyurethane homopolymer, poly(methyl methacrylate) homopolymer, and simple blended samples. |
