Pectin, a structural heteropolysaccharide, has been widely used in various areas. Pectin can be ionically crosslinked into hydrogels having network structures of rod-like phases. In this study, the nano-size rod shape of pectin successfully revealed on the surface of pectin hydrogel particles. Pectin solution was first prepared in an acidic condition with heating and stirring, and mixed with calcium chloride solution. Precipitation of pectin hydrogel is achieved by adding acetone using soxhlet extractor. After drying, nanorods were clearly observed at the surfaces of particles. Their diameter ranged from 100 to 300 nm, and the length from 500 nm to several microns. The obtained powders appeared to have similar internal structures as pectin hydrogels, which was confirmed by XRD. The pectin nanorods exposure process is expected to provide different properties from the normal pectins, such as different particle behavior, surface properties, and bioadhesive characteristics. |
