We developed a methodology to functionalize mesoporous silica using an amphiphilic organotriethoxysilane containing thermally reversible urethane moiety, which, upon heating, dissociated to produce isocyanate functionality tethered to the silica structure. We expected that the presence of the isocyanate moieties in the mesoporous structure could be exploited in numerous ways. We prepared periodic mesoporous silica materials (PMS) by co-condensation of an amphiphilic organotriethoxysilane and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) using a cationic surfactant as a template. Prepared PMS showed highly ordered hexagonal structures. We introduced an ATRP initiator into PMS and prepared nanofibers by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of acrylonitrile inside the pores. |
