Hybrid of Thermally Coupled Reactive Distillation with Pervaporation for Improving Energy Efficiency of Butyl Acetate Production Process |

The novel design of a hybrid process of a thermally coupled reactive distillation with pervaporation membrane is examined in this work. Transesterification methyl acetate with n-butanol to produce methanol and n-butyl acetate is used as the case study. This work evaluated the possibilities of commercial pervaporation to integrate with distillation process for eliminating the azeotrope composition in the recycle stream. The hybrid system of thermally coupled reactive distillation with pervaporation is the favorable retrofit technique as this configuration can be directly implemented by reducing the total reboiler duty and total annual cost up to 63% and 47%, respectively.
