Synthesis of photo-responsive ligands and its application to Cs+ extraction from aqueous solutions |

Photo-responsive azo benzo crown ethers (a-BCEs) were prepared as Cs+ ligands. Structures of a-BCEs and their intermediates were confirmed by FTIR and NMR. UV-vis absorption studies confirmed photo-switching abilities of the compounds. One a-BCE was preliminarily tested for LLE in two modes: (1) extraction by irradiation under UV then stripping under visible light using different stripping agents and (2) vice versa. The cis-isomer performed better Cs+ uptake (~ 43 mg g-1) compared to the trans-isomer (~ 33 mg g-1). Stripping by conversion of cis to trans (> 94% desorption) performed better than trans to cis (63-93% desorption). Further studies are ongoing.
