제목 Electrically Tuneable Liquid Crystal Photonic Bandgaps
초록 Chiral liquid crystal phases (N*LCs) spontaneously have a helicoidal arrangement of the liquid crystal molecules which have optical anisotropy. This results in forming a one-dimensional photonic band gap (PBG) with a high optical quality without requiring any complicated processing. Another benefit of the photonic band structure using chiral liquid crystals is the sensitivity of the photonic band gap (PBG) against external stress. In this study we investigate methods of electrically tuning the photonic band gap (PBG) in N*LC. The electrical control of the PBG is highly desirable for practical applications, however, hitherto wavelength tuning has been limited due to the destruction of the photonic band structure (PBS) by the presence of electrically-induced out-of-plane switching and electro-hydrodynamic instabilities. Primarily, this study aims to find methods for stable tuning over a broadband wavelength range with a short response time upon the application of an electric field.
