Piezoelectric Nanogenerators Based on Vertically Aligned M13 bacteriophage |

The M13 bacteriophage has a well-defined structure with a length of 880 nm and a diameter of 6.6 nm and is covered by approximately 2700 copies of the major coated protein (pVIII). The high aspect ratio allows liquid crystallinity to the M13 phage. M13 phages can also easily amplify themselves in a highly regular manner through infection of bacterial host cells. Owing to those characteristics, M13 phage has been dealt with a candidate of building blocks for a self-assembly. The each pVIII proteins have a dipole moment that is directed from the tail to the anchoring domain. We fabricated a piezoelectric element using vertically assembled M13 bacteriophage as piezoelectric material. We then characterize the axial piezoelectric response of the phage based piezoelectric element, that phage based piezoelectric element enable a high piezoelectric response and tuneable piezoelectricity. |
