Facile and fast synthesis of polyaniline-coated poly(glycidyl methacrylate) core-shell microspheres and their electro-responsive characteristics |

Electrorheological (ER) fluids in general are suspensions of semiconducting or polarizable particles dispersed in medium liquids. The suspension exhibits field-induced reversible micro-structural transition from a liquid-like to a solid-like state under an applied electric field. In this study, a facile and direct route was introduced to synthesize core-shell structured composites consisting monodisperse poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) core and polyaniline (PANI) shell with uniform thickness. The spherical and monodisperse PGMA core was prepared using dispersion polymerization and PANI shell was synthesized via in-situ polymerization. Suspension of the PGMA/PANI particle dispersed in silicone oil showed typical ER characteristics under external electric fields. Dielectric spectra were also examined to provide the electrical polarization information. |
