For the first time dispersion polymerization of vinyl pivalate (VPi) has been successfully carried out at ambient temperatures in an ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([bmim][TFSI]) using 2,2’-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) as an initiator and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) as a polymeric stabilizer. The SEM images show that the obtained polymer particle size decreased with an increase in the stabilizer and a decrease in the monomer concentration. The reaction time and temperature of the dispersion polymerization as well as the monomer concentration affected the particle diameter of PVPi. The characteristics of the resulting polymers in ionic liquid were also investigated in order to compare with those of PVPi prepared in an organic solvent, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). It found that the molecular weight of poly(vinyl pivalate) (PVPi), which was synthesized in ionic liquid, is very high but not very high yield obtained. However, the FT-IR and NMR spectra of PVPi polymerized in both ionic liquid and organic solvent are similar. |
