Dispersion Polymerization of Vinyl Pivalate in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide: An Environmentally Benign Synthesis |

Dispersion polymerization of vinyl pivalate (VPi) in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) was successfully carried out utilizing poly(dimethylsiloxane-g-pyrrolidonecarboxylic acid) (PDMS-g-PCA) and poly(1H,1H,2H,2H-perflorooctyl acrylate) (PFOA) as stabilizers. It was observed that PFOA was a better stabilizer than PDMS-g-PCA as it produced more stable polymer latex in scCO2. In both the cases, no spherical polymer particles were formed. The effects of pressure, monomer loading and the stabilizer concentration were studied. It was found that an increasing initiator concentration increased the reaction rate and decreased the average molecular weight. In addition, the effect of temperature and reaction time on polymerization was also investigated. |
