Synthesis of a Water-Soluble, High Molar Mass Poly(azomethine) Rotaxane |

A novel polyrotaxane based on a supramolecular poly(azomethine) was directly synthesized by the polycondensation of two inclusion complexes of b-cyclodextrin/- poly(oxypropylene)diamine and b-cyclodextrin/terephthalaldehyde using [60]fullerene as the end-capping agent. The molar mass determination from gel permeation chromatography (GPC) confirmed that the polymers had high molar masses with a narrow polydispersity. The isothermal titration calorimetric study confirmed that each poly(oxypropylene)diamine unit can host seven cyclodextrin units, which was further supported by 1H-NMR spectroscopy and molecular modeling. The detailed characterization by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and FTIR spectroscopy as well as by thermogravimetric analysis corroborated the structure of the polymers prepared. |
