Room temperature iodine-curing of polycarbosilane accompanied with sublimation of iodo-compounds |

For the manufacturing silicon carbide (SiC) fiber, precursor polycarbosilane (PCS) fiber must be curing-treated to keep fiber shape during pyrolysis. In a previous study, we introduced the new curing method using iodine, which is special method because the curing can be processed at a relatively lower temperature than the thermal curing. Recently, we have found that the PCS and iodine was reacted each other even at room temperature. The structure of PCS before and after iodine treatment was analyzed by Si-NMR, H-NMR, C-NMR, FT-IR and EPR in order to know the structural rearrangement. The major change of PCS structure is first, the decreasing of Si-H bond, and second, the increasing of Si-O bond. We have also observed the reaction was accompanied by sublimation of new product with yellow-white color, whose compositions was analyzed with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS). |
