Novel resin modified glass ionomer cements (RMGICs) were fabricated by the successful polymerization of polycarboxylic acid such as polyacrylic acid or poly(itaconic acids) via atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP). In this work, acrylic acid was polymerized directly in its sodium salt form by ATRP. Controlled polymerization of carboxylic acid-base monomers is important as a tool for tethering of methacrylate functionality onto polycarboxylic acid backbone for RMGICs. FT-IR, 1H-NMR spectroscopies, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) were used to determine polymer molecular weight and polydispersities. |
