Investigation of the influence of ligand architecture and selection of metal on sterioselectivity in 1,3-butadiene (BD) polymerization had been studied in our previous work based on Co-salicylaldimine complexes. As a continuation of the work, we have designed and synthesized a new series of bis(benzimidazolyl)pyridyl/methylamine ligands of varying electronic nature with its open framework as support for cobalt(II) and its influence on BD polymerization were elucidated. The complexes were highly effective for BD polymerizations, on activation with ethylaluminum sesquichloride (EASC), in a stereoselective fashion predominated by cis-1,4 isomer (up to 97%). The substituents had remarkable effect on activity, keeping the stereochemistry in similar levels. Cyclic voltammetric analysis and UV-VIS spectroscopic analyses were undertaken to provide an insight in to the mechanistic feature of BD polymerization. |
