Hybrid materials are well-blended mixtures of different materials that may give the improved properties. We have studied hybrid thin films of polymers and inorganic nanoparticles to create multi-functional systems. Polyelectrolyte deposition process so called layer-by-layer process provides good opportunity to control the film properties including wetting, topology and chemical functionalities. We have studied polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) made with various weak polyelectrolytes, hydrogen bonded or ionic bonded systems, and examined their morphological change including porous transition upon different pH stimuli. We also compared organic self-assembled monolayers with PEM films in the study of interactions of biological moieties on the film surfaces. The organic-inorganic hybrid films were created by synthesizing metal nanoparticles using these polymer thin films as templates. Complexation reaction in PEM films will be also included in this paper. |
